Due to the pandemic, basketball was on hold for about a year at Lawrence Woodmere Academy. In February, basketball returned to LWA and our team had their first game since their hiatus! Unfortunately, this season was not like any other season. Now, it was mandatory for all players (and coaches) to wear a mask, and we couldn’t have any fans or spectators come to watch in the gym. Even though we couldn’t cheer them on in person we did cheer them on virtually. LWA’s Facebook Page live streamed all home games! We showed school spirit and supported our fellow Tigers by commenting encouraging words throughout the games! Coach Brett Tawil and his Tigers were number 1 seed heading into the playoffs after victories against Stony Brook, Knox, and LuHi (twice).
Our team had a great season and fought hard to secure their spot for the Championship Game! Daniel Carrion (CO’21) drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to tie the game at 61-61. However, they lost to Portledge 64-61. It was a very close and exciting game and we’re extremely proud of our basketball team! Congrats to Daniel Carrion (#1), Pol Canals (#4), and Nabiyu Matheu (#11), players from the Class of 2021, who were named in the Private Schools Athletic Association All-Conference Team!
